Evaluation: Question five
I feel that i was successful in attracting my audience due to the positive feedback i have from seventeen year olds. Although i haven't got a lot of response I've had some feedback which suggests interest and excitement. Such as 'Layout is great!' and 'I think it looks amazing!' It seems as if most of my friends have a Preferred reading, although the one example of Aberrant Reading was from a male friend who said 'doesn't really appeal to me' this is understandable due to the amount of female models and style. The audience seem to refer to the layout a lot, when speaking to them in person they said that it seemed a lot like a real magazine, and that you would pick it up off the shelf!
The fact that most of my audience took a positive preferred reading was very pleasing as it means i have completed what i set out to do. The help i have had from my audience has helped me complete the final piece to a satisfactory level which responds greatly with my set audience.

- Amy HemsleyI think its really good. The layout is great!
- Georgia ThomasI think it looks amazing! it appeals to me and I'm sure it would appeal to many more as it fits a gap in the market!
- Danni HughesLooks great, love the originality of it! Its definatly something i'd want to read!

- Tom ForresterDoesn't really appeal to me as it is not the sort of thing I would usually buy but it looks slick and professional I can imagine it being a successI used this banner also to attract my audience as i know they would like to have something they love up on their walls. A free gift inside my magazine which related to the kind of music my audience loves intrigues them to buy it.

Evaluation: Question three
Question 3
What kind
of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I feel my
product will benefit from the distribution company ‘Frontline’
I
have chosen this distributer as I believe my magazine fits the usual
conventions the distributor sells. Although my magazine doesn’t fit the usual
mainstream category I still feel it will fit well with the distributor as it
sells across a variety of places. This will enable my product to reach my
target audience and maybe others. Frontline also offers a high level of
marketing which will help my magazine by reaching more people.
From
my planning and research I found a specific target audience who I believe will
shop in the stores Frontline sell their merchandise to. I will expect my magazine
to be in small news agents and big supermarkets across Britain. This will help
my magazine reach all my audience enabling them to find the magazine in most
areas as it is convenient.
Frontline also
offer ‘multi-platform’ consumption. This fits perfectly with my target audience
as they will be able to reach the magazine digitally, this will enable the
audience to go out and buy the magazine or sit within the comfort of their own
home. My audience will already use the internet for many different things,
which makes this much more convenient and appropriate.
VintageSound will be an independent
company, this means the production and form of the magazine is not controlled
by Frontline. This means that this partnership enables Frontline to distribute
the product only. This makes everything a lot more expensive, but using
Frontline as my sole provider it will mean that more copies of the magazine
will be made which in turn, means higher levels of marketing.

Main task: Cover problems
I have had some problems with my cover font. I originally wanted a font I have previously posted onto my blog. Although when I tried to download this it wouldn't work so I have had to use another font for a substitute. The font i am now using doesn't do quite what I want it to do.. and that's to have a bit of white pattern in it but it still gives a retro-feel to the magazine.

Main Task:Planning, Costume

The dress to the left is a simple black dress which will most likely get featured within the magazine due to its glamourous appeal. The dress to the right has one long sleeve and a retro like pattern, this fits well with the audience and genre.

The skirt to the left is long at the back and short at the front to draw in interest. The top to the right is a very vintage like design with its long sleeves and ruffles.

Main Task: Planning, Location
I have been constantly thinking of different locations, i have many ideas such as:
-Friends modern lounge- with pastel blue sofas and large window backgrounds. (I would have my model sat on the sofa wearing a black dress crossed slightly for a classy look. The model will be looking directly into the camera lens.)
-Garden chair and table- This set of chairs and a table have a old white vintage look to them, i could have my model sat outside with a warm coat on maybe surrounded with leaves to create the look of winter for the season.
-My bath- This idea seems slightly odd but i would lay my model in a black glamours dress and surround her head with rose petals suggesting relaxation and comfort, the idea is out of the ordinary which may intrigue readers.
-Landscape- I will take my model onto a hill top on sunset and allow them to stand on a windy night with a flawy dress to capture a beautiful scene, suggesting a free spirit.
-Pattern- I may stand my model in front of a white screen, which i can then later photoshop a vintage styles pattern look onto the background painted by myself.
For group photos within the magazine i will may use any of these locations to suggests elegance and style, the models will be holding props such as microphones or guitars.
Main task: Planning, Colour scheme
This pallet of colours is what i will refer to when doing my magazine. The colours within this pallet are soft and light which relates to my target audience, these colours are not harsh on the eyes and all blend rather well together.
I will choose at maximum three colours for on my cover, contents and double page spread. I will try keep the colours the same with different tones so the magazine has its own style which can be recognised easily.
To keep the magazine looking fresh i will only stick to these three colours, i am going to stay away from lots dark colours as this can steer my magazine into a different type of audience. Pastel pinks and purples may be a bit to gender appropriate so i will try and focus on different colours so get the desired affect.
Vintage styled colours seem to be quite 'dusty' in tone, with other colours within them. Lighter colours seemed to be favoured within the vintage times.
To increase effect i may use some metal like colours such as silver, this is to create the illusion of the old microphones singers used to use to give a cutting edge and simplistic effect to the covers.

Main Task: Planning, Fonts
I decided on the name of my magazine to be 'Vintage Sound' As i believe this fit's perfectly with my genre of music and niche audience. I love the fourth font down, i think the slight serif font gives it a slight sophisticated look whilst still looking crisp and unique. The slight pattern within the letters gives the font a feminine look to it without being to young natured.
Main Task: Planning, Models and props

I decided to use these girls as they are all willing to model within the magazine.
Left-Amy Hemsly
Right-Eleanor Kenny
Bottom- Natasha Gardner
Props i may include may be items such as holy, a fake microphone or old leaves. The holly and leaves may feature to represent the time of month and time that the magazine would come out, the microphone would be used to suggest that the model is a old famous singer to intrigue the readers.

Main Task: Planning, Photographs

I would like my cover to feature a quirky styled classy singer, i will use one of my models to sit in my chosen location with different props to bring the photo together.
This photograph of the band Beriut is very simple yet effective because all the band members are smiling. I want this to be the same case with my magazine to represent a friendly and casual feel throughout.

This Gloria Gaynor photograph is one of my favourites and is what i would like to incorporate into my magazine cover and double pages. The way in which Gaynor is stood and what she is wearing gives a feeling of class, her clothing also represents a retro feel.
I am still uncertain whether i want a plain background for my front cover so the readers are focused on the main model of the cover, although the idea of a background draws the readers in and enables them to relate to the location.

Main Task: Planning, Audience profile.
The target audience i am focusing on are teenage girls between the ages of 15-25. I have picked this target audience as i believe they will be influenced well by the type of magazine i wish to produce. A growing amount of girls this age are slowly starting to widen their fashion and music taste, such as shopping in charity shops and listening to older music.
I define my audience as.
-You are generally between the ages of 15-25
-You enjoys partying with friends and family.
-You work hard to achieve things later on life.
-You have your own style, and you tend not to copy mainstream fashion.
-You enjoy shopping in vintage shops such as COW and Urban Outfitters
-You enjoy looking and feeling like a woman, class and glamour is important to you.
-You would prefer to be curvy than stick thin.
-You would cry if you lost your phone.
-You are currently in the C1 section on the Jicnar scale.
My audience will love my magazine as it will take them back to a time, that they wish they lived in. They will love the bright colours and classy pictures which makes them feel elegant and ladylike whilst reading. They like the vintage feel of the magazine as its bring the old back to the new.
Watch these youtube videos into such artists that my audience love to listen too.

Main Task: Research and Planning, Language
Language
Language used within NME magazines

This double page spread uses language targeting their target audience 'The teenagers' suggests teenagers are reading as they like to read about people their age. 'Young, dumb and full of filthy tunes' This is a kind of joke to the audience as if the magazine is 'taking the mick' out of their readers. Although the statement isn't insulting it gives out a friendly and playful aspect.

Main Task: Research and Planning, ideas for target audience
Main Task: Research and Planning, ideas for target audience.
I asked my target audience what they would like in a new recent magazine this is what they came up with.
10 minutes ago Rhiannon Jones
Hi guys, i need to find out what my audience want in a magazine. Id really appreciate it if you gave me some ideas on what you would like in a music magazine. Thanks
|
hey everyone! i think you should include lots of bright colours and retro music!also pictures of vintage clothes and bands that were around in the 60's!
Yeah, i agree Eva, I love vintage clothes and the retro feel, i love old artists and good classics, but don't tend to like 'top of the charts' music so wouldn't buy that kind of magazine. It would have to include old classics from the 60's, bands like the beatles, etc.. as i'm bored of the same music and i want to hear new bands i've never heard of before!:)
I agree with Eva as you don't see magazines with retro music in any more as it seems to be all about the modern music. The fashion back then is never seen in the magazines any more and would be great to see what it was like! It will fill that gap in the market!
Thanks guys thats really helpful ill bear it in mind! :)

Main Task: Research and Planning, double page spread.

All the pictures denotes professionally taken photos with blank backgrounds so the audience are focused on the main image and not distracted. Smaller images are taken within different locations to brighten up the spread and give it a appealing contrast to white backgrounds.

Main Task: Research and Planning, contents NME
The 'NME' is separated into three main columns to make it easier for the readers to understand. The main colours used are orange white and black. This helps make the contents look less cluttered. Coloured numbers are used to make it easier to find what number article the reader is looking for. Graphic arrows are used to appeal to the target audience and direct them to interesting articles which are particularly important.
The 'NME' contents is separated into three main columns to make it easier for the readers to understand. The colours are strictly orange white and black to keep the contents un cluttered and modern. Graphic arrows are used to appeal to the audience focusing on interesting articles they would be interested in.
The main picture is off a man jumping off stage. The picture is not professionally taken and is probably taken within a live show. This interacts with the audience as if they where there.
Main cover lines have a black background which makes it easy to navigate to the part the reader wants. The contrasting black and white help with this easily.
Different types of fonts are used to create interest and large numbers are used in bold to navigate the readers to the right pages.
The headline 'INSIDE THIS WEEK' is in a newspaper styled font which creates an interesting detail to the contents because its as if the magazine is trying to pretend that its a newspaper rather than a magazine suggesting formality and sophistication.
Main Task: Research and planning, Alternative magazine.
After researching many magazine's it has became apparent to me that there is a gap in the market for a magazine which features old artists. I like the layout and retro like feel to some of the 'NME' magazine's which also feature some old acts which i feel will attract young adults. The simplistic look to the 'NME' magazines keeps them looking fresh and modern yet with a old twist. The colour schemes fit well and creates the feeling of a sophisticated up market product. I will continue to look at old issues of 'NME' and frequent new ones to base my magazine on.
This issue of 'NME' used three colour schemes which consisted of pink, black and white. This keeps the cover looking simple and sleek with out giving it a definite gender reference due to the dark colourings.
Sans Serif font is used to reduce the formality of the magazine, this suggests more frequent readers of a younger age range. A subheading is used in the middle of the cover to bring attention to the article. This also uses anchorage as the image is of the writing its self 'Rihanna' The image denotes a female with a short stylish hairdo, wearing blue eyeshadow. She is wearing a black top with high shoulders, this connotes power as it is playing on the idea of a mans figure which is usually perceived of dominance. She is also wearing blue bottoms and a black ring which denotes
rebellion as the ring is thick and bulky unlike a elegant dainty ring. This represents the magazine as strong and dominant.
This is the type of style i really like within the 'NME' magazines. The cover is playing on the idea of the retro feel with its headline '60 years of NME' the '60' is in a typical retro type of font. The magazine is playing with soft yellows and whites. I feel this is great use of colour as it isn't harsh on the eyes but creates a happy feel to the magazine.
One puff is used in a clean cut circular shape. This makes the magazine look very sophisticated and up market. The clean lines and sharp fonts also give the feel of a un cluttered layout. Text is used in minimal effect to allow the image to succeed its full potential.
The cover has a running head which grabs the readers attention which has no background, using only white and yellow coloured fonts which contrasts with the dark grey background.
Main Task: Research and Planning, deeper look into NME magazine
I am going to focus on the different aspect of layout NME have used to create an effective cover.
The cover uses a Sans Serif font with a colour scheme of black and white. Different text is used in bolder font to bring attention to the statement, with grey text being 'less important'. The two images of men denotes two young adults with long brown hair making surprised and happy faces, there faces are cropped out for effect. This connotes a slight playful and informal side to the magazine.
Various Puffs are used to grab the readers attention, some of the text is on the outside of the circular shape which creates dimensions and interest. The text inside the shapes are more interesting than the formal 'Ariel' font. This adds to the playfulness of the magazine.
The font used also suggests a sense of the 60's and the retro era which has been very popular and successful within the media and pattern.
Main Task - Research and Planning
I am focusing on researching different music magazines to come up with ideas of my own.
This magazine is also very simplistic but it seems more modern because of the model in the background. Although this is slightly similar to 'ClassicFm' the fonts are smaller and slightly thicker. The colours are strictly black and white which makes the cover look clean and fresh looking
In this 'VIBE' Magazine the fonts and overall look of the cover is much harsher than the covers of 'ClassicFm" and 'NME' this is because of the red coloured fonts, and the image represented which connotes rebellion. The Singers head overlaps the Title as well as some text. The magazine seems more up market due to the un cluttered layout.

This 'TOPOFTHEPOPS' magazine is fairly different to the other magazines i have researched. This is due to the lower market aspect, this is the case as the language used is focused around younger people. There are more images to keep the audience occupied also. The colours range from pinks to purples and red's. This makes the magazine look slightly cluttered.
This magazine is very different to all the other magazines as it is quite cluttered with its layout. It has large text above the title which could become confusing and unclear. Text is used in various sizes to create depth. The colours focus around white and grey to contrast with the dark background.
